Unidentified Large Winged Fish

Our next unidentifiable fish is a strange one indeed. It looks to be some sort of Flying Fish, but none of us know the species...

"hey my friends sent me a pic of a fish and im just curious as too its name and abilities. she already sent it alive to her local college biologist and thats as far as i heard. its just weird looking and i cant find nothing on it . maybe u can shed some light on it."Can you identify this fish?

UPDATE: This fish has been identified as a species of Gurnard fish, for more info click here!  Still not sure the exact species of this fish!  Please keep trying

  1. i have seen this fish too and it tends to scurry along the bottom of the water attacking crabs and things. It looks like it has 6 small legs but i have never observed it close enough to see

  4. I saw one like this in Zante, Greece when i was snorkeling. It was a foot long and scurried along the bottom of the sea scrapping with what looked like little hands digging into the sand. It was accompanied by a smaller one, which could have been its young. I observed it for aprox 5 mins before it scurried further away. Have since searched for info with the local Zante people, and no one seems to know what this fish was.

  5. Photographed this same fish today near Makena Landing in Maui, Hawaii. Never saw one before in 21 years of diving off Maui. Saw it eat something out of the sand as it was cruising the bottom. Do not know its name. Here is where you can see my post of it on facebook /Users/jackbreen/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Originals/2010/Aug 30, 2010/IMG_0432.JPG

  6. Found it via google. Saw one yesterday off the coast at Ka'anapali. It is a gurnard. The one I watched seemed to be able to change color from dark to light. It was in maybe 10 feet of water. Very cool.

  7. I caught a smaller one off the Gulf Coast in Mississippi on Sept. 9, 2010. I didn't touch it because, not being from the coast, I didn't know anything about it. It looked like one of the dinosaurs off Jurasic Park...As soon as I pulled it from the water, it's 'wings' came out. It was definately a spectacle.

  8. I just saw this a fish outside of the Westin Kaanapali Resort and it isn't afraid of anything. I got about 2 feet away from it and it didn't move. It seems to walk/fly across the bottom of the ocean.
